Positivity

Wrriten by Tony Aloise

Have you ever noticed how a conversation with someone might leave you feeling bad?  Something is said that triggers you into a mood you prefer not to be in.  That’s negativity.  Have you had the experience of engaging with someone and they left you feeling excited?  That’s positivity -- the transference of positive energy to another.

Positivity can be felt by the receiver.  You know it immediately when it happens to you.  You feel it emotionally because you become happy and full of energy.  You feel it physically as you get a smile on your face and get “warm and fuzzy”.  You become motivated to perform at a higher level.  Transferring energy to another can be sensed by the giver.  You can see it in their reaction and body language.  You know a “gift” was given.

Many things lead to positivity.  Examples include smiling, giving encouragement to a friend, giving positive feedback or an affirmation that reinforces a unique personal characteristic.  It happens when you add constructive value and meaning to the life of someone you care about.  It occurs by choosing the right words and tone with care and love.

Practice it.  It is a communication skill (and attitude) that starts with your own positive thinking.  Go tell someone they are special and why it is true.  Make it a personal goal to give positive energy to your family, friends and mentees.  You can receive it, so listen for it.  You can give it, so transform lives.
